The 2023 NFL preseason has kicked off, and the Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the New Orleans Saints on the road.
Despite falling behind 17-0 in the first half, the Chiefs orchestrated a remarkable comeback, taking the lead in the late third quarter.
A late touchdown by the Saints added suspense, but a failed two-point conversion due to a penalty preserved the Chiefs’ narrow advantage – at least temporarily.
A dramatic interception with just 58 seconds left gave the Saints a chance to snatch victory from the Chiefs. You should also check Lions Secure Preseason Win Despite Weather Interruption.
A successful Blake Grupe field goal secured the win for New Orleans, leaving Kansas City with a 0-1 preseason record.
Critically, the Chiefs’ first-string offense struggled in the opening quarter of the first preseason week. Except for a Patrick Mahomes scramble on third down and a connection with running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, the initial drive with Mahomes saw limited production.
An unsuccessful fourth-down sneak with tight end Blake Bell underscored concerns about its effectiveness. Nonetheless, fret not; any unease is largely unfounded given the proven history of this unit.
Subsequently, with quarterback Chris Oladokun taking the reins following an interception by cornerback Kahlef Hailassie, the Chiefs rallied.
Oladokun skillfully evaded multiple pass-rushers to find wide receiver Justyn Ross for a 15-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter.
Another drive saw Oladokun connect with rookie wide receiver Kekoa Crawford for an 8-yard touchdown pass, propelling the Chiefs into the lead.
Adding a field goal in the fourth quarter extended Kansas City’s lead by seven points. Yet, the Saints remained resolute.
They closed the gap to a single point with a late-game touchdown drive. The Chiefs’ subsequent possession ended in disappointment as defensive end Kyle Phillips intercepted Chris Oladokun deep in their territory.
Justyn Ross shared the spotlight, netting two receptions and ranking fifth among all receivers in yards with 29. His touchdown catch put him in company with veteran Richie James and standout Kekoa Crawford.
Ross also had three additional targets from Buechele during the game.
The absence of a fullback this season and Charles Omenihu’s suspension have bolstered Ross’s chances of securing a spot on the Chiefs’ initial 53-man roster.
Even if not retained, there’s a strong likelihood another team would claim him off waivers. You may also read Erling Haaland’s Double Strike Propels Manchester City to Opening Victory in Premier League.
This, coupled with uncertainty around fellow receiver Kadarius Toney’s knee injury, has fueled growing excitement around the 6-foot-4 receiver. His performance on the field, be it during practice or games, further stokes the hype.
Whether Ross ultimately secures his spot on the team or not, head coach Andy Reid expressed satisfaction with his impact and well-being.
The unique dynamics of each game keep fans eagerly anticipating how these narratives will unfold, both on and off the field.
