Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the Proud Boys, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for his role in orchestrating the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. This marks the longest sentence handed down in connection with the Capitol attack, during which lawmakers were certifying President Joe Biden’s election victory.

Tarrio was convicted of seditious conspiracy, a rarely used charge related to planning to overthrow the government, as well as multiple other counts. He had been in jail since his arrest the previous year. You may also read Iconic Musician Gary Wright, Known for ‘Dream Weaver’.

Although Tarrio was not physically present in Washington during the riot, he played a significant role in organizing the Proud Boys’ involvement. Prosecutors described him as a “naturally charismatic leader” and a “savvy propagandist” who was the primary organizer of the seditious conspiracy for which he was convicted.

The sentencing recommendation from prosecutors had sought a 33-year prison term for Tarrio, while his defense attorneys requested no more than 15 years.

During the sentencing, Tarrio expressed remorse for his actions and described the events of January 6 as a “national embarrassment.” He claimed that he did not intend to change the election’s results but had planned to attend an event to support then-President Donald Trump and his friends.

It’s worth noting that more than 1,100 individuals have been arrested in connection with the Capitol assault, with over 630 pleading guilty and at least 110 being convicted at trial. The attack resulted in five deaths, including a police officer, and caused millions of dollars in damage to the Capitol building.
