Passengers across England are facing travel disruptions on Friday due to a major strike by rail workers. The strike action involves members of the train drivers’ union Aslef, who are employed by more than a dozen train companies. They have initiated a strike and will also refuse to work overtime on Saturday.

Certain operators, such as Northern, Avanti West Coast, Transpennine, Southern, and Thameslink, are not running any services on Friday. On Saturday, less than half of the trains will be operational, and some services may face short-notice cancellations, according to the Rail Delivery Group (RDG), which represents the rail companies.
Robert Nisbet, a spokesperson for the RDG, emphasized the need for Aslef to demonstrate “movement” regarding changes to working practices. He mentioned that no talks have occurred between the RDG and Aslef since April due to a core principle disagreement.
The RDG, representing rail companies, has described the strikes as “unnecessary” and anticipates “more disruption to passengers looking to enjoy the end of the summer holidays.”
They argue that Aslef’s leadership is reluctant to present a fair and reasonable offer to their members, which could increase the average driver’s base salary for a four-day week without overtime.
Many train companies currently running services have adopted reduced timetables, with altered starting and finishing times. While most of the disruption is concentrated in England, Scotland and Wales are also affected by cancellations due to strikes by long-distance operators.
This dispute has persisted for over a year, with no scheduled talks and no sign of a breakthrough. Speaking at a picket line in north London, Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan expressed the determination of their members and emphasized the need for ministerial intervention to resolve the dispute.
